CIVILIZATION
A Journey from Amoral to Immoral
Modern human evolved in Africa around 300,000 years ago and initially lived as hunter- gathered. Migrated all over the world. Around 10,000 BCE. Neolithic Revolution marked development of agriculture, which fundamentally changed the human lifestyle.
Human beings existed in environments where survival was the paramount concern. The raw struggle for existence, the need to gather food, shelter, and procreate, took precedence over the abstract notions of ethical behavior. In this state, human actions were largely governed by instincts, needs, and pragmatic considerations. The concept of morality based on notions of good and evil, justice and fairness was absent.
Early humans, living in small tribes or bands, had to cooperate for survival, but cooperation was driven by self-interest and necessity rather than by an ethical framework. Social bonds were formed because they were advantageous for the survival of the group, not because of any inherent belief in altruism or justice.
As human societies grew more complex, so too did their need for systems of governance and social order. With the rise of agriculture, the development of trade, and the emergence of hierarchical structures, the scale of human interaction expanded beyond the immediate kinship circle. This led to the need for shared moral codes, systems of belief that could guide behavior and resolve conflicts in increasingly complex social settings. The first moral systems were based on needs of survival and co-existence, Moral behavior was often defined in terms of adherence to divine commands or the maintenance of harmony with cosmic or natural laws. At this stage, morality was still largely about control, control of individuals and groups through shared beliefs, rituals, and laws. The concept of justice, fairness, and rights began to take shape, but morality was still primarily amoral.
The growing human societies and its need for system of governance and social order emerges many forms of governance and social system, to keep things in order and avoid unnecessary conflicts. emerge of religion is the most crucial in all other. because it’s not only affected the social system but also deeply governance and economic activity. The hierarchical structures that came into existence with the rise of agriculture and development of trade, become more and more complex after the emerge of religion, as few declared themselves superior and the privileged. and developed a system where these so-called superiors have all the rights. And those who were in the bottom of this hierarchical structure have no rights. This is the point where a journey from Amoral to Immoral starts.
The journey towards immorality is marked by a shift in human behavior and values, driven by the growth of power, greed, and inequality. As civilizations expanded and became more sophisticated, the structures that once created for social order and ethical behavior became the tools of exploitation and corruption.
As societies grew larger and more stratified, the moral decay increased. Elites could justify their actions by framing their behaviors within systems that privileged power over fairness, or they could rationalize cruelty and exploitation by dehumanizing those below them in the social hierarchy. Slave economies, colonialism, and imperialism are prime examples of how power structures often justify immoral behavior on a massive scale, all the while claiming moral or civilizational superiority. For example, the horrors of slavery were not only rationalized but also institutionalized, with legal systems, religious doctrines, and economic structures all working together to maintain the system. Immorality gets embedded in the very fabric of society its economic, political, and social structures are not only complicit in the perpetuation of immorality but also encouraging.
The journey from amoral to immoral is not an inevitable path but a reflection of human choices, values, and priorities. And religion plays the most significant part in this moral downfall of human. It turns human either a tool of exploitation or make them victim of it.
